Šavnik and the Komarnica Valley: Pošćenje and Nevidio Canyon

Westward over the plateau.

Šavnik is a small municipal town on the route between Nikšić and Žabljak. The surrounding valleys deserve time of their own, especially around Pošćenje and the Komarnica river. This is a useful area for combining a village stay, hiking and a planned canyoning trip.

Nevidio canyon

Nevidio is the narrow gorge cut by the Komarnica between the mountains of Durmitor and Vojnik. Going through it involves swimming, climbing and jumping, with equipment and a guide. The National Tourism Organisation presents it as a summer activity. Water levels and weather determine whether a particular departure can run.

Choose a canyoning operator who explains the physical requirements, equipment and meeting arrangements before booking. Ask how much time to allow for the whole outing, including the walk back and changing. Someone who prefers to stay dry can spend time around the village and valley instead of joining the canyon passage.

Pošćenje as a base

Pošćenje is home to Ethno Village Nevidio, whose cottages and restaurant provide a base for exploring the area. A meal or an overnight stay can make more sense than squeezing canyoning into a long driving day. Check seasonal availability directly, particularly outside summer.

The Komarnica hydropower question

The wider Komarnica valley is also the subject of a contested hydropower proposal. In its February 2026 report to the Bern Convention, the Montenegrin government said the previous environmental assessment procedure had ended after EPCG withdrew its application in May 2025. Any continuation would require a new assessment. The project remained in strategic plans, with construction dependent on further procedures and approvals.

An April 2026 strategic environmental assessment prepared for amendments to Šavnik’s spatial plan went further: it found that the plant’s effects on the Komarnica canyon could not be compensated and recommended abandoning the project. A recommendation of that kind does not by itself cancel a project that remains in the strategic plans; the plan amendments and any new assessment will decide.
