Remote work from the mountains depends on more than download speed. Before choosing a rural house, establish whether you can join video calls, keep equipment powered and reach the property during winter.
Starlink in Montenegro
Satellite broadband can serve places where a fiber connection is unavailable. In February 2026, Montenegro's communications regulator, EKIP, said Starlink was preparing to enter the market and expected the conditions for providing service by the end of June. Starlink Montenegro was registered in April. Neither fact establishes that residential service can now be ordered and activated at a particular address.
Check Starlink's availability map, current plans and equipment costs for the intended location. A terminal brought from another country under a roaming plan may have different conditions and restrictions. Do not assume that it can provide permanent service in Montenegro.
Test the working setup
Open pasture may give a clearer view of the sky than a yard beside mature trees. Use the Starlink app's obstruction check from the proposed mounting position. An installer should assess the cable route, wind and snow exposure, safe maintenance access and any permissions needed for the mount.
Check fixed-broadband options and test cell reception from more than one carrier inside the proposed workspace. Try video calls and uploads at different hours. A mobile hotspot offers a possible backup; a battery backup for the terminal, router and laptop helps if electricity fails.
Digital-nomad residence and land ownership
Montenegro offers temporary residence to digital nomads working electronically for a foreign employer or their own company registered outside Montenegro. The government's guidance describes permits of up to two years, with a possible extension of another two, subject to supporting documents, housing, health insurance and means of support. Confirm the current requirements with the Ministry of the Interior before moving.
A land purchase is a separate decision. Foreign ownership of agricultural and forest land is restricted, and a Montenegrin company may be considered for a large holding. This creates an important legal question: the Foreigners Law says a person with digital-nomad status who establishes a company in Montenegro or registers as a sole trader loses that status. Have a lawyer consider the ownership structure and residence route together before forming a company or signing a contract. Ask separately about tax treatment.
Try a working week in winter
On the Krnovo plateau, snow and wind can affect road access even after clearance. Check heating, water, electricity and the journey to supplies as carefully as internet speed. The mountain access and utilities guide covers the practical checks. Spend a normal working week in the area before buying if remote work is the main reason for relocating.
